Young carers need to be recognised, understood and supported within school & college so that they can enjoy the same life chances and opportunities as others.

Key facts:

  • It is estimated that 1 in 12 secondary-aged children are young carers
  • On average they achieve significantly lower GCSE results
  • Young Carers aged 16-18 are twice as likely to be not in education, employment or training.
  • 68% of young carers have experienced bullying
    (BBC (2010), Carers Trust (2013), Audit commission (2010), The Princess Royal Trust for Carers (2010))

What you can do to improve outcomes for young carers in your setting:

E-Learning

NEW for 2022, GYC have developed a bespoke E-Learning module for education staff. As part of your continuous professional development enrol and complete the Young Carers Course.
